Challenge

A motorsport client needed an adapter to mount 5×120 wheels on a 5×114.3 hub. The adapter had to maintain full concentricity, withstand dynamic loads at track speeds, and have minimal thickness to preserve suspension geometry.

TMT Solution

We designed the adapter from a single piece of 40HM (chromium-molybdenum) steel at 15 mm thickness. CNC turning achieved centering ring concentricity below 0.01 mm. Mounting holes were milled with positional tolerance ±0.02 mm. Mating surfaces were ground to 0.005 mm flatness.

Result

The adapter passed dynamometer testing at speeds equivalent to 280 km/h with no axial runout. The client ordered a complete set of 4 plus an additional batch with a different pattern (5×112 → 5×120) for a second vehicle.

What material do you use for wheel adapters?
We typically use 40HM (chromium-molybdenum) steel for superior fatigue resistance. On request, we also produce adapters from 7075-T6 aerospace aluminum — lighter but equally strong.
What is the minimum safe adapter thickness?
The minimum safe thickness is 12 mm for steel and 15 mm for aluminum. Optimal thickness depends on the bolt pattern and intended load — we determine this individually for each order.
